Capturing Autumn in Rivington: The Timeless Watercolours of Colin Callon.
As summer gently fades and the air turns crisp, the West Pennine Moors take on a special kind of magic. Few artists have captured this seasonal transformation as beautifully as Colin Callon, whose evocative watercolours bring the rich tones of Lancashire’s autumn to life.
Born in St Helens in 1932, Callon grew up surrounded by industrial landscapes rather than scenic views. It was in his late teens that he discovered the countryside, sketching and painting the rolling hills, woodlands, and moorlands that would inspire him throughout his life. While he worked as a graphic designer for much of his career, watercolour was always his true passion. His free, impressionistic style reflects influences from masters such as Singer Sargent and Peter de Wint, yet his work retains a warmth and individuality that is unmistakably his own.
Rivington and Winter Hill, in particular, were favourite haunts. These landscapes, constantly changing with the seasons, became the heartbeat of his artistic journey. From misty mornings to sun-dappled woodland paths, Callon’s paintings immerse us in a world where light, colour, and atmosphere blend effortlessly.
